In a press release today, Satwinder Kaur announced that she is running for Kent City Council, position 2, because she’s passionate about Kent and wants Kent to continue to be a great place to raise a family.

“Kent is my home. I grew up here, graduated from Kentridge High School. I had my first job at 16 in Kent at an adult care facility as a Dietary aide in Kitchen. We bought our first home in Kent on East Hill after living in apartments and rental homes. My son attends Kent School District and will be entering 7th grade at Meridian Middle School next year,” Kaur said.

Kaur started her service to the community as a PTA parent at Sunrise Elementary when her son was in kindergarten.

Kaur’s volunteer service to the community includes Kent Parks, Adopt-A-Street program, Kent HOPE, NW Harvest, Kent Relay for life, Kent International Festival, Kent Cornucopia Days, Severe Weather Shelter at Kent Lutheran Church, Kent Downtown Partnership, Teanup2Cleanup, and more.

Organizations Kaur has supported with her time or money over the years include Kent HOPE, Kent4Health, Kent Food Bank, Kent Rotary, Kent Relay for Life, Communities in Schools in Kent, Kent Community Foundation, Kent Sister City Associations etc.

“Being a part of the Sikh community, I was successful in bringing the community to Kent International Festival after three years of persistence. I worked with our Kent Museum to host/organize cultural exhibits. This helped build trust and brought diverse communities to our museum,” said Kaur.

Kaur’s commitment to organizations in the city and region include:

Chair, Cultural Communities Board, City of Kent
Green Kent Park Steward, Kent Parks
Board of Trustees, Greater Kent Historical Society
Board of Directors, Living Well Kent
Rotarian, Kent Rotary
PTA, Executive Board Sunrise Elementary School
Member, Mayor’s Diversity Task Force, City of Renton
Board member, Puget Sound Access

“I don’t believe in just donating money to organizations, I believe in giving them my time as well. Sometimes, a helping hand is more valuable and all that is required for an organization,” added Kaur.

Kaur believes her personal and professional backgrounds uniquely qualify her to serve on the Kent City Council. Kaur has a bachelor’s degree in business administration, supply chain management and accounting. She earned her master’s of business administration in technology management from the University of Washington. She also holds various certifications in Six Sigma and Lean management from the University of Washington.

Kaur has years of senior level experience in operations management, supply chain and technology management. Currently, she is a Director of IT Service Deliveries and Operations at a large IT firm.

Kaur worked two jobs to pay for college while a single parent. One of these jobs was Kent City Council assistant from 2012 through 2014. She has experience in local government working with the Council and Mayor to research new resolutions/ordinances while listening to your concerns in the background to find innovative solutions.

“Satwinder has already shown her leadership and organizational skills in listening to residents and taking action on their behalf. She walks the talk serving others to help make Kent a safe, beautiful community. I wholeheartedly endorse her candidacy for Kent City Council.” – Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke

“There are not many people in Kent better prepared to serve on the City Council than Satwinder Kaur. I am excited that Satwinder has stepped forward to serve on the City Council. She will be an excellent representative for all of us. I encourage you to learn about her campaign and I hope you will join me in supporting her on your ballot this fall.”   –  Councilmember Dennis Higgins

“Kent faces some new challenges,” said Kaur. “We need to continue to prioritize public safety and infrastructure improvement such as roads. We also need to start planning for revenue reduction from the Panther Lake annexation and Streamlined Sales Tax leading to the fiscal cliff. We need to think out of the box to find funding for our parks. As our city grows, we need to prioritize economic development by bringing good paying jobs to Kent. We need to build stronger relationships with the Kent School District and local colleges so that our kids have a head start on successful careers.”

Kaur wants to hear from local residents and work together to find a solution, so that Kent continues to be a great place to work and call home.

Kaur has been endorsed by Kent Firefighters, Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke, Kent City Councilmembers Bill Boyce, Tina Budell, Brenda Fincher and Dennis Higgins, King County councilmember Dave Upthegrove, 33rd District State Rep Mia Gregerson, WA State Rep, 8th District Adam Smith and others.
