An Auburn man has been charged with second degree murder for a fatal Jan. 3 shooting in Kent.

Jacob C. Thiel, 22, was ordered held in King County Jail under $1 million bail.

Prosecutors allege that Thiel shot his acquaintance Geoffrey Sherrard, 48, outside the Hawthorn suites shortly after 9 a.m. on Jan. 3 because he suspected that Sherrard had stolen his cell phone.

Police say that Thiel admitted that he was angry over the alleged theft, and confronted and shot the victim once.

Charging papers say that he shot Sherrard in the chest – through his heart – and that he died later at a hospital.
