DESCRIPTION:Looking for a way to help Kent look and feel better? \nThe Kent Police Department has the perfect solution – register to take part in a Community Clean Up Day on Saturday\, June 18\, 2022\, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nLend a hand to eliminate graffiti and reduce vandalism in OUR community of Kent. \n“Together\, we can keep Kent clean\, beautiful and safe for children\, families\, seniors and visitors\,” police said. “Let’s make our mark—and cover theirs!” \n\n\n\nSign up teams of 6–8 willing volunteers. We’ll meet for coffee at 9 a.m. at the Kent Commons parking lot\, located at 4th Avenue N and W James Street. Staff will provide supplies\, instructions and directions to your clean-up areas. Teams will drive themselves to their locations.\nVolunteer groups will paint over graffiti and pick up litter across the City. Kent PD will provide volunteers with locations\, supplies needed\, paint for covering the graffiti\, and instructions. DESCRIPTION:Local tourism\, civic\, and economic development organizations are rallying around an upcoming event that celebrates the history\, mythology\, and pop culture relating to the 1947 Summer of the Saucers\, the infamous Maury Island Incident\, and the world’s first alleged encounter with the iconic Men in Black on June 22\, 1947. \nThis fun new event will be held Wednesday\, June 22\, 2022\, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Quarterdeck in Des Moines (map below). \nKey supporters of ‘6/22: The Men in Black Birthday Bash’ include Seattle Southside Regional Tourism Authority\, Des Moines Legacy Foundation\, Rotary Club of Des Moines and Normandy Park\, and Destination Des Moines. \n“We are launching this event in time to capture the 75th Anniversary of the historic events that mark the beginning of the modern UFO era and our local role in that legacy\,” said event co-founder Steve Edmiston. “We simply could not pull it off without these organizations quickly pledging their support.” \nThe Des Moines Legacy Foundation has given a grant of $1\,947 to sponsor the event. President Patrice Thorell called 6/22 co-founder Edmiston a “fantastic storyteller and entrepreneur” and predicted that a successful Men in Black Birthday Bash could become a catalyst for even more unusual events. \n“Des Moines has been Ground Zero for quirky historical incidents that have the potential to draw the curious\,” Thorell said.
