SUMMARY:Steel Magic Northwest’s holiday concert will be Sunday\, Dec. 15 at Kentlake High School
DESCRIPTION:For over a decade\, Steel Magic Northwest has provided after-school steelband programs for students in the Kent School District\, offering a unique opportunity for children to engage in music education. \nDespite its longevity and success\, the program remains one of Kent’s best-kept secrets. \nThe group will host its annual holiday concert on Sunday\, Dec. 15\, 2024\, at 5 p.m. in the Kentlake High School auditorium. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, with a suggested donation of $12 for attendees aged 12 and up. \nThe concert will showcase performances by the youth steelband\, including the Pan Wizards Steel Orchestra\, an advanced ensemble with international recognition. \nHowever\, the non-profit faces challenges as it begins its 2024-25 season on Sept. 24. The organization’s ability to recruit students—particularly 5th graders—has been hindered by changes in the school district\, including the move of 6th graders to middle school. Without the chance to speak directly to middle school students\, recruitment efforts have been halved. \nThe Pan Wizards Steel Orchestra has garnered international acclaim\, recently opening for R&B/Reggae legend Maxi Priest at the Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival. Despite such achievements\, the group continues to struggle with local visibility. \n“We have no budget for advertising\, but we hope the community will support us by spreading the word\,” said Gary Gibson\, Executive & Artistic Director. “This program is for all students in the district\, and we want every child in Kent to know that they can join us.” \n\nThe non-profit hopes to inspire more local students to join their steelband and benefit from the rich musical and cultural experiences offered by the program. With the start of the new school year\, they aim to reach as many young people as possible. \nFor more information on the program or to donate\, attendees are encouraged to visit the concert or contact the non-profit directly. \nFor more info\, visit: \nhttps://www.steelmagicnorthwest.org
