DESCRIPTION:The City of Kent is now accepting applications for Kent 101\, a free nine-week civics course designed to help residents\, business owners and students better understand how local government operates. \nThe Spring 2026 session begins Feb. 19\, with applications due by Feb. 15\, 2026. \nClasses will meet in person at Kent City Hall Chambers every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. through April 16. The ninth week includes a graduation and reception. \nCity officials describe Kent 101 as a program that deepens participants’ understanding of city services\, departments and decision making through lectures\, interactive activities and tours. Participants who complete the course receive a certificate of completion. \nThe course is open to people 16 and older who live in Kent or have a business located in the city. Participants may miss no more than one class session to graduate. Applications must be completed and submitted online\, and selected participants will be notified by email. \n\nAccording to the city\, the program is aimed at high school and college students seeking career inspiration or experience\, working adults who want a stronger understanding of government operations\, and retirees interested in becoming more involved in their community. \nProgram benefits include meeting local elected officials and city staff\, learning how departments are connected\, gaining insight into how ideas move through City Hall and become implemented\, and connecting with other residents. \nKent 101’s stated objectives include engaging residents and businesses in learning how city government works\, improving communication between the city and the community\, providing insight into how decisions and finances are managed\, and empowering more people to take part in local government. \nMore info and application are here: https://www.kentwa.gov/guides/kent-101

DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Wastemobile season will begin in mid February\, offering King County residents free and convenient options to safely dispose of household hazardous waste at rotating collection sites through October\, according to King County. \nA local stop is set for Feb. 20 through Feb. 22 in Kent at Puget Sound Fire Station #75\, 15635 SE 272nd St.\, Kent (map below). \nHours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nThe service is intended to help residents safely get rid of common hazardous household products during cleanouts or routine home maintenance. Accepted items include batteries\, oil based paint\, antifreeze\, pesticides and many other hazardous materials. Officials advise checking the full list of accepted items and quantity limits before arriving. \n\nCounty staff provided several safety tips to help events run smoothly. Residents should not mix products\, keep items in their original containers when possible\, label anything that is not\, and secure materials to prevent spills or leaks. Products should be stored in a trunk\, truck bed or trailer and separated from personal belongings.
