Upcoming, family-friendly events at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve

If you are a nature lover, love to learn or both, you’ll want to check out these events upcoming events, hosted at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve (21656 184th Ave SE, Renton, WA 98058).

Please note, all events are free but donations of $10 to $15 per participant are suggested. SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve is run off of the generous donations of private individuals. All ages are welcome, but children under 13 must come accompanied by an adult guardian (exception – summer camps do not require an adult guardian).

Earth Day: A Native Plant Celebration

This Earth Day, learn to love native plants! Come to SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve to discover the beauty and functionality of our Puget Sound Lowland plants. Join us for a day of discovery and fun to explore how you can show the Earth some love this spring season by choosing plants that support wildlife, improve water quality, and look beautiful to boot!

Explore the beauty of our trails with a guide to lead you through the diverse ecology represented at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve. Guided Nature Walks are outdoor explorations that take place rain or shine. Come with weather appropriate clothes and shoes for moderate levels of walking – inclines or uneven ground may be encountered on this walk.

This month, explore the upland forest of the Nature Preserve. See forest succession in action, discover what “an octopus tree” could be, and feel like you’re walking back in time!

Save the Frogs Eco-Fest

Join SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve and the Woodland Park Zoo to explore the wonder of amphibians and learn what you can do to protect them and their habitats. Amphibians are the least understood land vertebrate, but are a critical part of the ecosystem. Play froggy games, participate in froggy crafts, and view SHADOW’s own amphibian pond!

Indigenous Peoples, Native Plants, and Peatlands

Join the Snoqualmie Tribe to learn about traditional uses of the native plants commonly found in bogs! Hear about the unique land-management strategies of the Snoqualmie People and how peatlands were historically utilized, then take a guided walk through the Nature Preserve with tribal staff. This one-of-a-kind event brings together the unique habitats at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve and the cultural knowledge of the Snoqualmie Tribe.

Teen Service Camp

$40 = $10/day to cover snacks

Join us at the Nature Preserve this summer for days of service and friendship! Teens will enjoy  time working in the outdoors, learning about the native and invasive plants of western Washington, and hearing from natural resource professionals. Each day will feature lunch with a local environmental science professional! This camp gives a window into the environmental science field and exposes students to a variety of career options!

SHADOW Half-day Summer Camp

Restoration Work Party Dates: April, May and June 2017

Learn about and preform restoration in a beautiful and complex wetland system! Restoration Work Parties take place Saturdays from 10am to 2pm at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve (21656 184th Ave SE, Renton, WA 98058). No previous experience or tools are required, simply arrive with weather-proof clothing for working outside, a water bottle, and a smile. Please be aware that you may encounter muddy areas and plants with thorns. These events are held, rain or shine!
