Kent Police detectives and patrol officers arrested 12 suspects during an undercover prostitution sting at a Kent hotel, targeting individuals who responded to online advertisements seeking sex for money.

The operation took place last week and focused on reducing demand for the commercial sex industry, which police say is closely tied to human trafficking.

According to the Kent Police Department, detectives working undercover communicated online with individuals seeking to pay for sex and arranged meetings at a hotel. When the suspects arrived, officers arrested them and booked them into the Kent jail.

Police said all of the suspects were men seeking women and had responded to an undercover officer describing what they wanted and how much they were willing to pay. Many of the requests were explicit and could not be publicly released, according to the department.

If suspects arrived in a vehicle to commit the crime, their cars were impounded.

The department said most suspects immediately requested a lawyer and were not questioned further. One suspect admitted his wife was out of town, police said, and that man had prior arrests for similar crimes.

Those arrested included residents from across the region, including Kent, Seattle, Federal Way, Tacoma, Covington, Sammamish, Ruston and Joint Base Lewis McChord. Ages ranged from 23 to 55.

KPD booked the following suspects into jail:

  • 48-year-old Ruston resident
  • 55-year-old Kent resident
  • 42-year-old Seattle resident
  • 31-year-old Kent resident
  • 23-year-old JBLM resident
  • 52-year-old Sammamish resident
  • 38-year-old Federal Way resident
  • 29-year-old Seattle resident
  • 53-year-old Seattle resident
  • 49-year-old Federal Way resident
  • 38-year-old Tacoma resident
  • 44-year-old Covington resident

“This last suspect struck the arresting officer and fled on foot towards the exit,” police said. “He was unable to figure out how to operate the unlocked exit door and was arrested. He had priors for crimes involving a minor.”

Kent Police said prostitution stings are one method used to combat human trafficking and the exploitation often connected to the commercial sex industry.

Police emphasized that many people involved in prostitution are victims who may have been coerced or forced into the trade.

“We can’t stress enough that the overwhelming majority of persons in the sex industry are victims who come from circumstances where this activity becomes their survival,” police said in a statement.

Police said many victims were first exploited as children and may be controlled through violence, drugs or manipulation. Some who were arrested in the past later reported that being taken into custody helped them escape the prostitution circuit because they were connected with support services.

Authorities encourage anyone seeking help or information about human trafficking to contact available support organizations. Resources cited by police include The Genesis Project, REST Real Escape from the Sex Trade, the Organization for Prostitution Survivors and the Washington Anti Trafficking Response Network.

The National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline is available at 1-888-373-7888, and the 988 crisis line can also provide guidance and referrals to support services.
