A stolen tricycle and the owner’s dog were safely reunited with their owner after a theft in downtown Kent, according to the Kent Police Department.

Police said Sgt. Lorette responded last week to a theft call from a downtown business after witnesses reported seeing a suspect ride away on an elderly customer’s three wheeler that had been parked outside.

According to Kent Police, the theft involved more than just the bicycle. The owner’s dog, named “Old Mann,” was inside a carrier attached to the back of the three wheeler when it was taken.

Witnesses and neighboring businesses provided photos of the suspect and assisted investigators in searching for the stolen property, police said.

Sgt. Lorette distributed photos of the suspect, bicycle and dog to patrol officers and drove the victim home. Shortly after arriving, he received a tip from a business patron reporting the location of the three wheeler near the Maleng Regional Justice Center.

Police said Sgt. Lorette responded to the area and found the bicycle hidden in bushes. More importantly, Old Mann was discovered alive and unharmed inside the carrier.

Because the three wheeler was too large to fit inside a patrol vehicle, Sgt. Lorette rode it back to its owner, returning both the bicycle and dog.

According to police, the suspect committed another crime two days later and was arrested by a Kent police officer. Investigators positively identified the individual as the suspect in the bicycle theft, and charges were filed in both cases.

The Kent Police Department praised the community members and businesses that provided information and photos during the investigation.

“We could not be happier that Old Mann is back where he belongs,” the department said in a statement.

Police also commended Sgt. Lorette’s efforts in recovering the bicycle and returning it and the dog to their owner.
