Registration is open for “A Sea of Baby Orcas,” a free storytelling, art and Southern Resident killer whale conservation education event set for this Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Kent Historical Museum.
The event will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and is designed for children to elders, according to organizers.
Registration is required because supplies are limited.
The Kent event will focus on the story of mother orca Tahlequah, J35, and her calf J61, also called Aldebaran or “Bara,” after the bright orange star of winter. The story will be narrated by Deborah Horne, a retired award-winning veteran KIRO 7 TV reporter, according to event information.
Participants will be able to paint a free eco-friendly fabric baby orca stuffie to take home and add paper baby orca cutouts to a mobile community art board, creating a growing “sea of baby orcas.” The event also will include a conservation education message and photo opportunities.
FieldLab founder and handler Julianne Ubigau and Jasper, an environmental scent detection dog, also are scheduled to appear, according to organizers.
Everyone who registers and attends is guaranteed a free eco-friendly fabric baby orca stuffie. Once the event reaches capacity, additional registrations will be placed on a waitlist.
The event is presented by local storyteller and artist Julie Seitz and the Kent Historical Museum.
The Kent program is the first of three free standalone public events planned in August. Additional events are scheduled for Friday Harbor on Aug. 15 and Burien on Aug. 28, according to organizers.
The project is funded by the City of Kent Arts Commission, Kent Community Foundation, City of Burien Arts Commission, Environmental Science Center, a 4Culture Public Access Grant recipient in Burien, and local businesses and individuals.
Organizers said the original illustration “Close to Mother: Tahlequah J35 and her calf J61 in the Salish Sea” is by Marcela Soares.
