Kent Police arrested eight people and recovered a loaded, stolen handgun during a recent shoplifting emphasis operation at a Safeway store, police announced.
The operation was led by the department’s Crime Reduction Unit and supported by patrol and Safeway Loss Pevention officers.
Police said eight suspects were arrested and charged with a total of 17 charges.
All were also trespassed from the store.
According to police, the suspects included five men and three women ranging in age from 21 to 63 and from Kent, Tukwila, Renton and Tacoma. Officers said the individuals were observed on camera concealing items and leaving the store without paying.
During the operation, officers also pursued a 21-year-old Tacoma man who attempted to flee. Police said he was located hiding near a building and was found in possession of a loaded, stolen handgun. Officers also recovered stolen merchandise.
Police said the suspect dropped the firearm when confronted and was taken into custody without further incident.
The department said it plans to continue conducting similar shoplifting emphasis operations at various locations, with times and locations not announced in advance.
