Kent Police are urging domestic violence victims not to suffer in silence after officers responded this past weekend to a 911 call reporting a woman being beaten in her home.

Police said a neighbor called to report the sounds of an argument and physical assault. When the neighbor attempted to intervene, the male suspect reportedly lifted his shirt to reveal what appeared to be a weapon, prompting the witness to back away.

Multiple officers arrived quickly and found the intoxicated suspect outside. According to police, he was belligerent, resisted officers’ directions, and refused to cooperate but was eventually taken into custody without further incident.

The woman, who had visible injuries, declined to admit she had been assaulted, which police said was likely due to fear of future consequences.

“This happens sometimes, but especially when the victim is terrified of future consequences for reporting their abuse,” Kent Police said in a statement.

Despite her refusal, officers investigated the scene and developed probable cause to arrest the suspect, who was booked into jail. The victim was transported for medical treatment and also received domestic violence victim services at the hospital.

Kent Police emphasized that no one should endure violence at home, regardless of their personal circumstances.

“We do not care about your gender, age, marital status, living arrangements, occupation or even your criminal history. You do not deserve to be a victim of violence in your own home,” the department said. “You can call 911 any time, and we will come help you. We will make you safe, connect you to services, and on many occasions can connect you to organizations that set up temporary emergency housing and legal paperwork if that is needed.”

Police also thanked the neighbors who called 911 and attempted to help.

“Your actions mattered,” the department said.
