On Friday, May 17, the under-construction new Kent YMCA was vandalized by four juveniles who were quickly apprehended by Kent Police.
The suspects allegedly spray painted a swastika and other insensitive language on the walls.
“We are saddened by this event and disheartened by the disrespect of our community space,” YMCA officials said. “We will work with Kent Police and the Kent Parks, Recreation, & Community Services department to determine next steps.”
Officials also said they believe this can be a teachable moment for the young people involved, who may be able to give back to the Kent YMCA branch through court-appointed volunteer service.
“Our leadership strongly believes that young people need second chances,” they said. “At the Y, we lead with compassion and will take this opportunity to share our diversity and inclusion practices with the Kent community where we can come together to celebrate our differences and the things that make each of us a valuable member to this community.”
The new YMCA is under construction at Morrill Meadows Park at 10828 SE 248th Street:
