Water you doing to prepare for a flood?
Did you know? Floods are the most common disaster in Washington State, and we’re in the midst of a regional Flood Watch this week. An atmospheric river is expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy rain. Sharp rises are possible on area rivers, and urban and small stream flooding may occur.
And anywhere it rains, it can flood.
Keep yourself and your family safe by following three simple steps when it floods:
- First, never walk or drive through flood water. It can hide deep holes, strong currents, and sharp objects.
- Second, don’t touch flood water and always wash hands before eating. Flood water has sewage and harmful chemicals that can make you sick. Make sure to wash children’s hands and wipe down pets if they have been outside around flood water!
- Third, stay protected when cleaning after a flood. Wear rubber gloves, rubber boots, an N95 mask, goggles, and long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Clear out storm drains on your street, keep important documents (like insurance papers) in a waterproof bag, and store chemicals (like cleaning products and motor oil) on an upper shelf or upper floor.
