Due to heavy, relentless rain from the “atmospheric river” that has arrived, the Green River has entered a phase 4 flood alert, prompting King County officials on Tuesday evening to warn that major flooding may occur along the river corridor.

The alert, issued at 5:12 p.m., means the river is at the county’s highest flood monitoring level.

A phase 4 alert signifies conditions where major flooding is possible, critical levees may weaken from saturation, and rapid changes in water levels can occur with little warning.

According to the county, sudden changes may include rapidly rising water, widespread inundation, road closures and utility disruptions.

Residents in the Green River Valley were urged to stay vigilant and be prepared to respond quickly.

“Be alert and prepare to respond quickly,” the county said in the advisory.
