The City of Kent is now accepting applications for Kent 101, a free nine-week civics course designed to help residents, business owners and students better understand how local government operates.
The Spring 2026 session begins Feb. 19, with applications due by Feb. 15, 2026.
Classes will meet in person at Kent City Hall Chambers every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. through April 16. The ninth week includes a graduation and reception.
City officials describe Kent 101 as a program that deepens participants’ understanding of city services, departments and decision making through lectures, interactive activities and tours. Participants who complete the course receive a certificate of completion.
The course is open to people 16 and older who live in Kent or have a business located in the city. Participants may miss no more than one class session to graduate. Applications must be completed and submitted online, and selected participants will be notified by email.
According to the city, the program is aimed at high school and college students seeking career inspiration or experience, working adults who want a stronger understanding of government operations, and retirees interested in becoming more involved in their community.
Program benefits include meeting local elected officials and city staff, learning how departments are connected, gaining insight into how ideas move through City Hall and become implemented, and connecting with other residents.
Kent 101’s stated objectives include engaging residents and businesses in learning how city government works, improving communication between the city and the community, providing insight into how decisions and finances are managed, and empowering more people to take part in local government.
