The Kent Chamber of Commerce this week announced the launch of the 2025 National Civics Bee®, a nationwide initiative designed to inspire middle school students to deepen their understanding of American democracy and actively engage in their communities.

The competition, hosted in partnership with The Civic Trust® of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, aims to foster informed and responsible citizenship among young Americans.

Middle school students in grades 6-8 from public, private, charter, and home schools are invited to participate in the first round, which begins with a civics essay competition. A panel of judges will review the submissions, selecting the top 20 students to advance to the local competition. This live event, scheduled for spring 2025 in Kent, will feature two rounds of civics questions and a Q&A session to test participants’ civics knowledge.

Local finalists will receive prizes, including a minimum of $500 for the first-place winner, and advance to state-level competitions. Winners from the state finals will be invited to compete in the national championship in Washington, D.C., in fall 2025, where the first-place winner will receive prizes valued at $50,000.

Zenovia Harris, CEO of the Kent Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of the event in Kent’s diverse community.

“In one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the nation, where our schools speak over 130 languages, this competition provides an incredible opportunity for young students from all backgrounds to engage with the principles that shape our country,” Harris said. “By fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging every voice to be heard, we are inspiring them to be active contributors to the strength and success of our democracy.”

The National Civics Bee® offers students a platform to showcase their knowledge, explore issues affecting their communities, and become engaged citizens of the future, said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation.

“Fostering a deep understanding of civics and government among our young students is critical to the vibrancy of democracy and civic life in America,” Harris added.
