Kent City Council President Satwinder Kaur this week announced her campaign for re-election to the Kent City Council, Position No. 2.
“With your support, we can keep building a stronger, safer, and inclusive Kent for all. Let’s keep moving forward together to deliver real solutions to real problems. I’d be honored to earn your vote,” Saur said.
Kaur grew up in Kent and came from humble beginnings with immigrant parents who could not speak English and had trouble making ends meet. She started working at the age of 15 to support her family while attending Kentridge High School. Through tough times she worked two jobs while attending college and raising a child. She graduated with an MBA from University of Washington and currently works as a senior engineer for an IT company. She and her husband, a Boeing engineer and Kentwood High School graduate, are raising their four children here.
“Being local is one of my greatest strengths that I bring to the council. It allows me to connect with our residents and understand their concerns because their concerns are also my concerns.”
Kaur got involved in Kent politics through her 20+ years of community service. She started by volunteering at local non-profits to clean up streets and parks to being on the boards of many of those non-profits.
“You may have seen me pulling blackberries, planting, and cleaning up our parks; volunteering at NW Harvest, KentHOPE, Sunrise PTA, Kent food bank; or planning/attending many events around our city with my kids.
“This is because I am passionate about Kent. I want Kent to continue to be a great place to raise a family with safe streets, beautiful parks, thriving businesses, and vibrant community.”
She was first elected to the Kent City Council in 2017, re-elected unopposed in 2021 and unanimously chosen by her colleagues to serve as Council President in 2024. She believes experience, dedication, and results matter over political rhetoric to serve on the Council.
“It’s very easy to make claims and promises without experience and knowing the facts. I bring proven experience, dedication, and my abilities to work across political division to make decisions that will improve our city” said Kaur.
Priorities for a Stronger, Safer Kent
If re-elected, Kaur’s priorities include:
- Enhancing Public Safety. We have to be smart about crime and deliver results, not just rhetoric. Addressing public safety takes a holistic approach which includes continuing to hire and retain police officers, providing them with advanced training and updated resources. Building trust between community and law enforcement by expanding community-based programs like Community Immersion Policing and Community Court, so we can all work towards our shared goal of a stronger safer Kent. These are the strategies that are resulting in a reduction in crime.
- Investing in Infrastructure with safer school zones, repaired roads, modernized sidewalks, and expanded public transportation access.
- Protecting and Expanding Parks. Green spaces are vital to our quality of life. We have to ensure every neighborhood has safe, accessible, and well-maintained green spaces for families to enjoy.
- Supporting Local Families, Seniors, and Businesses. Our small businesses are the cornerstone of our economy and I will continue to create opportunities for economic growth, support small businesses, and expand programs that help families thrive.
- Strengthening Community Connections. Our diversity is our strength, and we can enable our communities to thrive through expanded language access, cultural engagement, and volunteer opportunities that bring neighbors together.
- Delivering Results. During her time on the council, Kaur has made public safety a top priority. She supported the hiring of additional police officers, ensured they had updated resources, vehicles, and training, and championed the Community Immersion Law Enforcement Program. She also expanded Kent’s Community Court to focus on rehabilitation and trust-building between residents and law enforcement. In fact, in her tenure the number of police officer positions in Kent have increased from 105 to 167 and the city has seen a reduction in crime in the last two consecutive years.
Kaur’s leadership goes beyond policymaking. Throughout her years of service, she has been a hands-on volunteer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was on the front lines with community partners, distributing food, working at the food bank, and personally delivering fresh produce and essential supplies to families in need.
A proud Kent School District graduate, Kaur is deeply invested in Kent’s future—not just as a public servant but also as a parent. As a PTA mom, she has been actively involved in local schools, advocating for safe learning environments and strong educational opportunities.
As Council President, Kaur has also championed major investments in Kent’s parks and infrastructure. Morrill Meadows Park and West Fenwick Park have both received upgrades, including accessible amenities, lighting, and safer trails. She helped secure more than $70 million in infrastructure funding for sidewalks, safer school zones, and a new East Hill North Community Park, supported by $2.5 million in state funding.
Drawing on her IT background and MBA in Technology Management, she helped modernize the city’s website, strengthened cybersecurity, and improved language and translation services for community members. Kaur is the leader with the experience, expertise and values needed for Kent to continue to be a place where families thrive and where there are economic opportunities for all.
Kaur’s re-election campaign is bolstered by broad bipartisan and community support. She has earned endorsements from Mayor Dana Ralph and every member of the Kent City Council – Bill Boyce, John Boyd, Brenda Fincher, Marli Larimer, Zandria Michaud, and Toni Troutner. She is also backed by Kent Firefighters IAFF 1747, the Kent Education Association, and a number of regional and state leaders, including Congressman Adam Smith, Washington Lands Commissioner Dave Upthegrove, State Senator Claudia Kauffman, State Representative Chris Stearns, Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus, Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone, and the 47th, 11th, and 33rd Legislative District Democratic Parties, and more.
Experience, dedication, and results over political rhetoric. Please join Kaur’s campaign by volunteering, endorsing, or contributing.
