A 17-year-old Kent resident was arrested on Monday, Feb. 16 after police say he attempted an armed robbery at an East Hill bank ATM, fled in a stolen vehicle and was later taken into custody following a crash and foot pursuit.
Police said that officers were dispatched at about 8 a.m. to a bank on Kent’s East Hill after a 36-year-old Kent man called 911 to report that a masked suspect pointed a gun at him and demanded cash while he was at an ATM. The victim had a child in his car at the time, police said.
The victim told officers the suspect did not obtain any money and fled minutes earlier in a silver Toyota. Although the victim did not have a license plate number, he provided a detailed description of the suspect and vehicle, police said.
As officers responded, Flock Safety cameras generated notifications of a stolen silver Toyota in the area. Officer Bezon located the vehicle in a nearby parking lot and initiated a traffic stop. Police said the suspect, who matched the victim’s description, refused to stop and fled toward Renton, traveling northbound on SR 167.
Officers pursued the vehicle onto I-5 but terminated the pursuit after losing sight of it in traffic, according to police. As officers exited at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South, they found the stolen Toyota in a nearby intersection after it had struck another vehicle.
Police said Officer Hamilton saw the suspect attempting to grab something from the car while witnesses at the scene identified him as the driver. When told he was under arrest, the suspect ran on foot. During the chase, Officer Hamilton observed the suspect reaching into his waistband, which police noted is a common place for suspects to conceal firearms.
While running, the suspect stumbled and a gun fell to the sidewalk, police said. The suspect continued to flee despite repeated commands to stop. Officer Hamilton deployed a Taser, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
The handgun, identified by police as a Glock 17, was recovered from the sidewalk along with multiple magazines.
Police said the original victim and his child were not injured. Fire personnel responded to the crash scene and no serious injuries were reported. Multiple witnesses remained at the scene and provided statements and evidence, including locating a mask that matched the one worn by the suspect near the stolen vehicle.
The 17-year-old suspect was booked into the King County Juvenile Detention Center on multiple felony charges related to the attempted robbery, eluding and gun possession, as well as other charges connected to the hit and run, according to the Kent Police Department.
“We want to thank the victims and the witnesses for the excellent information they provided that assisted KPD in making this arrest,” police said in a statement. “Great teamwork, use of Flock Safety cameras, and solid tactics by this patrol crew led to getting this suspect into custody.”
