Mayor Dana Ralph and Police Chief Rafael Padilla of Kent reassured residents in a video released on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, that the city’s longstanding policies of serving all residents, regardless of immigration status, remain unchanged.
The statement was made amid heightened fears and misinformation following recent federal executive orders on immigration enforcement.
“For decades, as a city and police department, we have served all residents without regard to immigration status. That will not change,” Mayor Ralph said.
Chief Padilla emphasized that the Kent Police Department does not enforce federal immigration laws, in compliance with state law, and reiterated that undocumented residents should not hesitate to call 911 when they need help.
“If you are a victim of a crime, your immigration status is irrelevant. Our mission is to protect and serve all members of the community,” he said.
State law prohibits local law enforcement from inquiring about or sharing an individual’s immigration status unless required by a criminal investigation or court order.
Both officials also reaffirmed their commitment to partnerships with federal agencies, but only in cases involving violent criminals or organized crime.
The video aims to dispel misconceptions and assure residents that Kent remains a welcoming and safe community for all, regardless of documentation status.
“Your immigration status in the City of Kent is not our concern, and we don’t take enforcement action on it,” Chief Padilla said. “Our mission is to serve and protect all community members, including undocumented immigrants.”
