Kent Police detectives and Valley SWAT officers arrested a 46-year-old Des Moines man early Monday, Nov. 17, 2025 in connection with the 2021 disappearance and murder of 36-year-old Austin Leming, according to a statement from the Kent Police Department.
The arrest occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, after Valley SWAT surrounded a Des Moines residence and negotiators contacted the suspect, Brian Mares, by phone.
Police said Mares surrendered without incident.
The investigation began Dec. 12, 2021, when Leming was reported missing to the Puyallup Police Department. His last known location was initially believed to be in Puyallup, but detectives later traced his movements to an apartment in Kent, where evidence suggested foul play.
Kent Police took over the investigation and later discovered blood and other evidence indicating Leming had been inside Mares’ apartment before his disappearance. Detectives continued pursuing leads for nearly four years, conducting interviews, serving search warrants, and reexamining evidence before developing probable cause to arrest Mares on suspicion of second-degree murder, police said.
“This case is a perfect example of the dedication and commitment our detectives have to bring closure to the family of the victim, and justice to those who committed this heinous crime,” Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla said. “We continue to work to locate Austin’s remains as we support his family through this difficult time.”
