Kent resident Merle Reeder has been appointed to be a commissioner (position no. 2) of the Soos Creek Water & Sewer District, effective April 19, 2017. Reeder joins commissioners Steve Pfaff (position no. 1), Gary G. Cline (position no. 3), Darold Stroud (position no. 4) and Alice R. Marshall (position no. 5). Reeder will serve as commissioner through December 31 and will run for election in November 2017 to fill the remainder of his predecessor’s two-year term which ends January 2020.
Reeder replaces Commissioner Larry West who passed away. West served as a commissioner for Soos Creek since 2013, following more than 40 years in the private and public sectors. The Soos Creek Water & Sewer District meets on the first, third and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 4:30 PM and holds public hearings as needed.
Having lived in Kent for more than two decades, Reeder is eager to serve his community as commissioner and wishes to adopt West’s goal of setting fair and affordable water and sewer rates for those living in the district.
“As a past business owner and a long-time resident of Kent, I am honored to be appointed to this position. I look forward to serving the community where my kids have grown up and my wife and I have established our careers,” Reeder said.
Reeder is currently a salesman for Northwest Roof Service in Kent, working with homeowners, property managers, commercial business owners and investors, responsible for estimating, negotiation, and overseeing projects in the residential and commercial markets. He also holds a real estate broker’s license, so he can assist his wife Marti Reeder, Managing Broker of “Team Marti” with John L. Scott, as needed. Prior to that, Reeder owned a general contracting business, Reeder Brothers Construction, for 30 years.
Owning a business in the construction industry has given Reeder a strong background in various aspects of the building industry and in the day-to-day management of a small business. He has experience with estimating, construction management, property development, and working with various city and county building departments and their codes and regulations.
“As a business owner, superintendent, builder and developer, I’ve been exposed to many different facets of running a business which will be helpful in tackling operational concerns, rates and other issues that I will face as a commissioner at the Soos Creek Water and Sewer District,” Reeder added. “I support the district’s mission of providing reliable, high quality water and sewer services to southeast King County in an efficient and cost effective manner, and I’m ready to do my part.”
