Join Kent volunteers for annual citywide litter cleanup

The City of Kent is partnering with Kent Downtown Partnership, Kent Station, Republic Services and the Kent Lions’ Club to host their annual Team Up 2 Clean Up Day, a citywide litter clean-up event. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, May 13 from 8 am to noon.

Residents, neighborhood and faith-based organizations, civic groups, schools, youth organizations, businesses and families are encouraged to get involved with this citywide effort.

Volunteers can pick up free gloves and trash bags and get directions to “hot spots” – the areas that need the most attention – by meeting at 8 a.m. at one of two locations:

Trash bags can also be dropped off at the same locations that day until noon.

According to city conservation specialist Gina Hungerford, this year’s effort is going to be even bigger and better than in years past.

“Even more of Kent’s organizations are joining forces to create awareness and make a larger impact. With check-in and drop-off locations on the East Hill and downtown, we hope this encourages participation and makes getting involved in cleaning up Kent more convenient,” Hungerford said.

There will be drawings and prizes awarded to participants who collect a ticket for every bag of litter they drop off, adding an element of fun to an otherwise dirty job. Thanks to Kent Station and Republic Services for donating prizes.

“We hope to get a great turnout at this year’s litter clean up,” said Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke. “Historically, several community organizations have held individual events. By working together, we can make a visible difference across the entire city.”

Individuals and groups interested in participating in Team Up 2 Clean Up Kent must register by 5 p.m., Friday, May 12 at KentWA.gov/TalkingTrash.
