Several railroad crossings in downtown Kent were closed Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7, for a fatal train/pedestrian accident investigation, according to officials.

The closures began around 12:30 p.m. and will remain in place until further notice.

Puget Sound Fire reported that its crews, along with Kent Police, responded to a fatal train and pedestrian accident near 1st Avenue South and East Willis Street. As a result, multiple railroad crossings in the downtown area are blocked.

Affected Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crossings include East Smith Street, East Meeker Street, East Gowe Street, East Titus Street and East Willis Street (SR 516).

The city advised drivers to use alternate routes during the investigation.

Crossings at James Street and South 259th Street remain open.

The BNSF Railroad has been notified of the closures.
