The Greater Kent Historical Society – celebrating its 25th anniversary – announced Wednesday (July 11) that it has named Mark and Elizabeth Albertson as this year’s King and Queen of Cornucopia.

The couple will reign proudly at the Cornucopia Days Festival this coming weekend – look for them at the beginning of Sunday’s parade in a classic car.

Mark Albertson

Mark recently retired as a financial advisor, but is well remembered for his law practice in Kent. He specialized in estate planning and establishing trusts for families with disabled children. A Naval veteran, Mark served as a Rotary local president, on the board of the Kent Downtown Partnership, and on the board of the Senior Housing Assistance Group (SHAG).

Elizabeth Albertson

Elizabeth served on the Kent Planning Commission before being elected for two terms as a Kent City Councilmember. Elizabeth worked while on council as a environmentalist and promoter of many parks and recreation programs. She served on the council which approved building the Showare Center. She served on the Board of Communities in School before her election. Both are well known for their support of various public service agencies in the area, including Kent Youth and Family Services and various efforts to deal with those families which are homeless.

“The Greater Kent Historical Society believes this pair, by their sacrifice, leadership, and public service, have improved the quality of life for all Kent residents,” organizers said. “They are worthy individuals we should celebrate on this joyous occasion.”

The Grand Parade will be this SUNDAY, JULY 15, starting at 2 p.m., along 4th Ave from Willis to James Street.

This year’s parade theme is “Memories, Moments and More.”

Here’s more info from KCDays.com:

PARADE INFORMATION:
Our children of Kent are encouraged to decorate their bikes and practice their parade waves as parents and friends look on the sidelines. There won’t be a separate category for the kids this year but rather a chance just to join in and have fun being in our home town parade. We are anticipating the presence of several floats, the SEAFAIR pirates
and clowns and the Seattle All City band.

SEAFAIR ROYALTY:
In its 69th year, the tradition of SEAFAIR Royalty is rich with custom and acclaim. Known throughout the Northwest and as far away as Mexico and Japan. SEAFAIR Royalty serves as the official “mascots” for SEAFAIR and Greater Seattle. King Neptune Rex and the Prime Minister for decades have embodied the Puget Sound Area’s image of fun, celebration and community involvement and esteem. King Neptune Rex and his Prime Minister represent the SEAFAIR Festival at key events throughout the year. They symbolize the dignity of the community and serve as greeters and promotional spokespersons for the festival. The King is chosen for his community leadership and stature.

The Prime Minister is chosen from the experienced ranks of SEAFAIR and provides festival continuity and knowledge. The King is the highest honorary dignitary of SEAFAIR, is recognized as such throughout the Pacific Northwest, attends key SEAFAIR events and out-of-town festivals with the SEAFAIR Float tour, and serves as a representative of SEAFAIR and of the City of Seattle.

SEAFAIR PARADE MARSHALS:
We also would like to extend our thanks to the SEAFAIR Parade Marshals for their nearly 46 years of support in helping us organize and stage our Kent Cornucopia Days Grand Parade.

OTHER DIGNITARIES AT PARADE:

  • Miss Cornucopia 2018 and and her court
  • Kent Old Timer’s King & Queen Royalty for the Day
  • Mayor Dana Ralph
  • Members of the Kent City Council
  • Numerous local, state & national elected representatives
