A 39-year-old Maple Valley man was arrested Monday evening after allegedly fleeing the scene of an injury crash involving an electric bike and later being found in possession of a stolen firearm, according to the Kent Police Department.
The incident occurred Monday at about 7:29 p.m. near 104th Ave SE and South 248th Street, where officers were dispatched to a reported injury collision in the 9900 block of South 248th Street.
Police said a 42-year-old Kent woman reported that an e-bike rider collided with the front of her vehicle as she was stopped to turn. The rider was initially on the ground and requested an ambulance, believing his leg was broken.
According to police, the rider then asked the driver to cancel the 911 call, stating he believed he was wanted for warrants, before getting up and fleeing eastbound on the e-bike.
Officers broadcast the suspect’s description, and an officer located him riding on the south sidewalk near the YMCA along South 248th Street. Police said the suspect initially refused commands to stop but later complied without further incident.
Officers observed the suspect had an injured leg and called for Puget Sound Fire to assist. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to be booked into the King County Jail after receiving medical treatment.
Police said the suspect was identified by the victim driver and, during a search, officers found a loaded stolen Glock 19 handgun, additional loaded magazines, drugs and multiple identification cards and credit cards not belonging to him.
The e-bike was initially believed not to be stolen, but police later determined it had been reported stolen the previous week, though the serial number had not been available at the time of the report.
The suspect is expected to face charges including hit and run of an attended vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a controlled substance. The case has been referred to the Kent Police Department’s detective unit for further investigation and potential additional charges.
“Great job by the victim driver remaining calm and quickly giving accurate and timely information to the Sergeant,” police said in a statement. “This was critical in an unpredictable and evolving situation. It allowed the crew to rapidly reassess and work together to hunt for the suspect. Nice teamwork!”
