A 58-year-old man was arrested Sunday after parishioners helped Kent Police track him from a suspected burglary at a church to a Home Depot parking lot and eventually to the roof of a nearby market, according to the Kent Police Department.

Police said a church employee on Kent’s East Hill reported a burglary early Sunday morning after discovering that a Conex trailer on the property had been broken into.

Surveillance video showed a suspect cutting off the handle and forcing his way inside around 2:30 a.m. Two pressure washers and other items were taken.

Later that day, parishioners spotted a man in the parking lot of a nearby Home Depot who appeared to be selling the stolen pressure washers. When confronted, the suspect dropped the equipment and fled on foot, police said.

Witnesses told officers the man climbed onto the roof of the Asian Pacific Market in an attempt to hide.

Kent Police said parishioners kept watch from the ground while one person shouted updates from a nearby tree. Officers surrounded the suspect, but when he refused to climb down, Puget Sound Fire crews responded with a ladder truck. Officers then went up to the roof, where the man surrendered without further incident.

The stolen pressure washers were recovered and returned to the church.

The suspect was taken into custody and faces potential charges related to the burglary and theft.

“We won’t lie, assuming you’re not afraid of heights, it’s pretty fun to play firefighter occasionally,” police said in a statement. “A big THANK YOU to Puget Sound Fire for the literal lift and support. You can run, you can hide, you can even climb, but we’re not shy about asking for an assist when needed to catch a suspect.

“A special shoutout to the parishioners who worked as a team to force the suspect to stop running and stay put in a place we could get him. You guys are a force to be reckoned with and we are glad you’re on our side.”
