The first event on May 13 was a big success!

After much preparation and planning by countless volunteers and community members, Living Well Kent, a collaborative for a healthier Kent, launched the inaugural Kent East Hill Farmers Market and Bazaar at Morrill Meadows Park (10600 SE 248th St., Kent, WA 98030) on May 13, 2017.

Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke presented a signed proclamation, declaring it Kent Healthy Eating Day, and dozens of people from the community attended throughout the course of the day. Despite the intermittent rain and sunshine, it was a great first event.

Vendors sold fruits and vegetables as well as jewelry, collectibles and hand-sewn items, a local food truck provided a range of lunch options and residents supplied live music. The next farmers’ market is scheduled for June 30, 3 PM to 7:30 PM

Some of those who attended responded to a series of survey questions, with 22 percent of them saying they had never shopped at a farmers’ market before.

Most (70 percent) said they believed the farmers market should be held on weekends, and many believe it should be held mornings and afternoons and include fun activities. Vendors want to see more vendors at the market and more cultural foods. For future markets, they said there should be more outreach in the local community, including on social media. Living Well Kent is moving forward with plans to form the Kent Food Co-op, which is expected to begin operating the market next year.
