On Friday, July 19, 2024, Hayder Hasan Albu Mohammed, 40, was charged with attempted kidnapping in the second degree after allegedly attempting to abduct a 6-year-old girl at the Meridian Green Apartments on Kent’s East Hill on Tuesday, July 16.

The charges were filed by King County Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion.

As we previously reported, the defendant is alleged to have attempted to kidnap a 6-year-old girl after three preteen girls intervened to protect the child.

According to the charging documents, officers from the Kent Police Department responded to the 911 call around 8 p.m. on July 16. Witnesses reported seeing Albu Mohammed gripping the girl’s hand tightly and attempting to flee with her. The quick actions of three young witnesses, who confronted Albu Mohammed and recorded the incident, thwarted the abduction.

The victim’s family was unaware of the attempted abduction until police arrived. Albu Mohammed was detained by officers shortly after the incident, still wearing the clothing described by witnesses.

Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lakeysha N. Washington emphasized the seriousness of the crime in the bail request, stating:

“The facts of this case are quite concerning, and quite simply, every parent’s worst nightmare.”

Bail has been set at $250,000.

Detective Joshua Lamothe, who reviewed the case, reported that Albu Mohammed claimed he had merely asked the girl for help with his prayer beads. However, witnesses and evidence suggest otherwise, leading to the charges.
