A 72-year-old Seattle man was arrested last Thursday night, Aug. 29, 2024, following an attempted carjacking and shots fired outside a bar in Kent.

Kent Police were dispatched at 10:39 p.m. to the 25400 block of 104th Ave SE (map below) after a male suspect pointed a gun at a woman and demanded her car keys. When she did not comply, he struck her in the head with the weapon and fired multiple shots at a nearby crowd before fleeing on foot.

Officers arrived to find a large crowd and quickly began searching the area. The victim, a 46-year-old woman from Kent, sustained minor injuries from being struck but was otherwise unharmed.

No one was injured by the gunfire.

King County Guardian 1 responded to provide backup and advised that the observed male suspect had something they could not identify in his hand. It was unknown if he was still armed.

Witnesses provided a description of the suspect and his direction of travel, which led to officers locating him at a nearby King County Metro bus shelter. Officers DeVar and Blowers took the man into custody after a brief standoff. A handgun was found near the suspect’s location.

The suspect has prior felony convictions, including burglary and robbery, and was booked on charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

“Kent Officers want to thank everyone who stayed on scene to provide information about the suspect’s actions and a suspect description,” police said. “Great job by Officers at the scene in gathering the intel quickly, allowing searching Officers a chance to catch up to the suspect before he jumped on a bus and fled the area.”
