A burglary suspect attempting to flee from police in Kent’s Lake Meridian community on St. Patrick’s Day found himself outwitted by observant neighbors, a series of bad decisions, and the frigid waters of the lake.

Police allege that the 31-year-old Kent man broke into a garage just after 1 p.m., loading a cart with $1,200 worth of tools and stolen goods. His attempted getaway was quickly derailed when neighbors spotted him, and Kent Police were called to the scene.

“To say that he made additional poor decisions after his initial move would be an understatement,” Kent Police said in a statement.

A Bungled Getaway: From Boat Theft to Icy Plunge

As officers arrived, the suspect abandoned the stolen items and attempted another ill-fated escape plan—stealing a non-motorized boat from a neighbor’s private dock.

“Attempting his best Jack Sparrow moment, he decided to try and steal a boat,” Kent Police noted. “But the rope knots confounded him.”

Homeowners confronted the suspect and took photos as he struggled with the nautical knots securing the boat. Thwarted again, the suspect then made what authorities described as his worst decision yet—diving into the lake to escape on foot.

“We’re pretty sure he was unaware that this time of year, the lake temperature is around 40 degrees,” police added.

Cold, Shirtless, and Caught

After swimming across the lake, the suspect emerged onto another dock and tried jumping fences to evade capture. But neighbors continued calling 911, directing officers to his location.

Officers Landi and Lentz tracked the suspect’s movements, while other officers strategically positioned themselves in areas where he was likely to emerge. Eventually, the suspect was spotted, cold, shirtless, and visibly exhausted.

“He was not immediately cooperative but was eventually taken into custody without further incident,” police said.

The suspect was booked into jail for Burglary and Attempted Theft in the Second Degree.

Community and Police Praise Teamwork

Kent Police credited Lake Meridian residents for their quick thinking and detailed witness reports, which helped officers make the arrest.

“Great job, Lake Meridian neighbors, for looking out for each other, calling 911, and just being awesome witnesses,” police said. “Exceptional teamwork from our responding officers. Nicely done!”

The incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and collaboration between residents and law enforcement in keeping neighborhoods safe.
