A 27-year-old Kent man was arrested this week on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run after crashing into another vehicle and attempting to flee the scene near 88th Avenue South and South 228th Street (map below) earlier this week, police said.

Police said that Officers T. Thomas, J. Axelson, and N. Lontz responded to the crash after a 21-year-old female driver called 911, reporting the suspect appeared intoxicated and had walked away from the scene. The woman told officers her Chrysler 300 was struck head-on by a Toyota making a turn southbound onto 228th Street. Despite her attempts to avoid the collision, the Toyota hit her vehicle, and the driver left the scene without exchanging information.

The victim provided a detailed description of the suspect and handed officers his driver’s license, which had been left behind at the scene. Officers noted the address on the license was nearby, and Officer Thomas quickly located the suspect climbing stairs to his apartment.

The suspect was reportedly so intoxicated he needed assistance walking and had to be supported by Officer Thomas as he was escorted down the stairs. The victim later positively identified the man as the hit-and-run driver.

A judge approved a warrant for a blood draw to test the suspect’s blood alcohol content. Despite his level of intoxication, police said the man remained combative throughout the arrest and booking process, resisting officers and requiring additional precautions to ensure safety.

The victim was not seriously injured, and the suspect was booked into jail on charges of DUI and hit-and-run of an attended vehicle.

“This is one less driver on the street due to a great witness, quick response, working as a team and making smart choices,” police said in a statement.
