Two suspects were arrested on felony warrants during a proactive patrol on Tuesday after Kent Police K9 Officer M. Robinson observed a suspicious vehicle in the 1700 block of West Meeker Street (map below), an area that has seen a recent rise in criminal activity.
Officer Robinson noticed two individuals inside the parked vehicle near a local business. Upon approaching, he saw clear evidence of illegal drug use through the car’s window. When the occupants noticed the officer, they quickly exited the vehicle and attempted to walk away.
The male suspect, a 33-year-old former Kent resident, was carrying a knife in his waistband. When he turned back to re-enter the vehicle, Officer Robinson prevented him from doing so, concerned about the possibility of additional weapons inside. The female suspect, a 34-year-old Des Moines resident, complied with Officer Robinson’s directions and stopped her attempts to leave.
Dispatch confirmed that both suspects had outstanding felony warrants in King County stemming from a prior incident where they were involved in a car theft together. The male suspect’s bail was set at $150,000, while the female’s bail was set at $100,000.
Both suspects were taken into custody without further incident. The male was booked into King County Jail, while the female was transported to a hospital after stating she was overdosing on fentanyl before her booking.
The vehicle was sealed pending a search warrant to retrieve the drugs inside and was towed from the scene. The business owner also requested that both suspects be trespassed from the property.
“Nice proactive work by K9 Officer Robinson,” police said in a statement. “We are assuming that the suspects heard his partner Atena barking from inside the car, and this caused our suspects to re-evaluate their initial action to flee on foot. The suspects were taken into custody without incident, and KPD did not need to let the dogs out.”
