A 34-year-old man died early Wednesday morning, Aug. 28, 2024, after an officer-involved shooting occurred on the 100 block of Madison Avenue North, police said.
Kent officers responded to a 911 call shortly after 12:40 a.m. reporting gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, officers were outside their patrol vehicles when additional gunshots were heard, and they believed they were being targeted.
One officer returned fire toward the suspected shooter, who was positioned on an upper floor of a nearby building.
While officers cleared the building, a resident informed them that the suspect, believed to be the resident’s brother, had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an apartment on the upper floor. Officers entered the apartment and provided first aid until medics arrived to take over.
But sadly, despite life-saving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Valley Independent Investigative Team (VIIT) has been called in to investigate the incident, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
No officers were injured in the incident. The officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department protocol.
