The Kent Police Department is warning residents, particularly members of the Asian community, about a concerning robbery and theft trend impacting the region.
In these crimes, suspects approach victims in a seemingly friendly manner, engaging in small talk, offering gifts like money or jewelry, or even asking to pray with the victim. During these interactions, suspects may place fake jewelry or a towel around the victim’s neck while discreetly removing their real jewelry. In more serious cases, suspects have displayed knives and used threats or force.
The suspects are described as both male and female, appearing to be of Middle Eastern descent, and are estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old.
While most incidents have been reported in neighboring cities, Kent police are urging vigilance after cases surfaced at locations frequented by the Asian community. In Kent, incidents have been reported in areas frequently visited by members of the Asian community, including:
- Great Wall Shopping Mall
- Hong Kong Market
What You Can Do to Stay Safe:
- Be aware of your surroundings at all times
- Shop with a friend or family member, especially in locations where incidents have occurred
- Avoid wearing visible or expensive jewelry in public, particularly in the areas mentioned above.
- Report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement immediately.
“This criminal trend is impacting multiple cities and specifically targeting members of the Asian community. Your awareness is key to helping prevent further incidents and protecting yourself and others,” Kent Police stated in their advisory.
The department, in collaboration with partner agencies, is actively investigating these crimes.
