The City of Kent is inviting all to its annual Public Works Week event on Thursday, May 31, from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Accesso Showare Center.
This event is open to the public and welcomes attendees of all ages.
This annual – and national event – is a celebration of the tens of thousands of dedicated men and women in North America who provide and maintain the City’s infrastructure and services, (collectively known as Public Works) that we all use every day. The focus of the event is to educate and energize the public about the contributions Public Works Departments and their employees make to the quality of life in our communities, from cleaning and greening our neighborhoods, maintaining our river levees, to paving our roads and building sidewalks, keeping our water and sewer systems working, designing and managing construction projects and training the public for jobs in these trades.
The various sections of our Public Works Department, including the both the Engineering and Operations sections, will have fun, educational and interactive displays that explain and demonstrate their section’s function and the role it plays in maintaining our city infrastructure. These displays range from understanding how the city’s water system works, to measuring distance with City Land Surveyor equipment, to watching the Vactor truck of our Storm, Water and Sewer department at work. Our knowledgeable staff will also be explaining the importance of topics such as: the importance of native plants to a retention pond, what it takes to run the city’s traffic signal and pedestrian crossing system and the life of a pothole – what causes them and what it takes to fix them. Last but not least, there will be a lots of equipment for attendees to see up close and personal, gear that our pros use in their daily jobs and even some games that crews have planned.
This event allows staff and residents of Kent to connect with one another, building a bond that only strengthens our community.
The Public Works Week event also allows kids, teenagers and young adults to understand the types of awesome and meaningful jobs that could lead to their future career.
“We look forward to meeting you on May 31st!”
