Kent-based Theatre Battery will debut its production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” this September, featuring a diverse cast of more than 30 actors, including professional performers, local high school students, and members of the Kent community.
This marks the company’s first staging of a classical play, aimed at fostering community connection through intergenerational storytelling.
The production, which opens Sept. 1, and runs through Sept. 15, 2024 will take place in a transformed theater space at Kent Station, donated through sponsorship.
Admission is free as part of Theatre Battery’s “Radical Hospitality” initiative, allowing all community members to experience live theater without the barrier of ticket prices.
“This production brings together the Kent community and introduces local youth to classical theater in a meaningful way,” said Logan Ellis, the director of “Romeo and Juliet” and artistic leader of Theatre Battery.
The adaptation will showcase age-appropriate casting, with teenagers portraying the leading roles of Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt, and Mercutio, while professional Seattle-area actors take on key adult roles. In addition to the live performance, the show features live music, stage combat, and light audience interaction.
This production is part of Theatre Battery’s 13th season, which is dedicated to expanding its artistic scope beyond new plays to include a variety of performance forms.
