A 16-year-old Renton carjacking suspect was arrested early Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, 2025 after a Kent police sergeant spotted the stolen vehicle just minutes after the crime, authorities said.

At around 6 a.m. on Feb. 26, Sgt. Lorette was stopped at a red light at 240th Street and 104th Avenue when a Valley Com 911 dispatcher aired a “be on the lookout” (BOLO) alert for a silver Jetta stolen at gunpoint in Renton. According to dispatch, the Jetta was being followed out of town by a stolen Kia.

Moments later, the sergeant saw a silver Jetta approach the intersection—followed closely by a Kia. He quickly confirmed the Kia was stolen and discreetly followed both vehicles westbound, calling for backup and relaying updates to officers setting up spike strips.

The Jetta continued driving at normal speeds until the Kia sped away northbound on Central Avenue. Sgt. Lorette opted to stay with the Jetta due to the involvement of a firearm in the carjacking. When the suspect eventually attempted to flee onto Highway 167 and then back onto Willis Street, he lost control, skidding into a grassy ditch.

Officers removed the teen from the car with caution and took him into custody without incident. A gun sight, typically used to assist in aiming a firearm, was found in his pocket. The carjacking victim positively identified him as the suspect. Renton police took custody of the teen and assumed the investigation.

The stolen Kia was not located, but officers said they hope the suspect’s arrest will deter further criminal activity.

“Sgt. Lorette’s keen observation skills, fast thinking tactics and calm leadership had this suspect safely in custody within minutes of the carjacking,” police said in a statement. “Nicely done Sergeant!”
