A vigil was held on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024 for 27-year-old Demetrius M. Marr-Woods, a Kent resident whose life was tragically cut short during a shooting outside the Cloud 9 bar earlier this month.
The event, organized by family and friends, took place in the bar’s parking lot, where two separate shootings occurred just 15 minutes apart on the night of Dec. 8.
Attorney Evan Oshan, representing Demetrius’s estate, joined the gathering to seek justice for the young man and his family. Oshan expressed concerns about safety protocols at the establishment, where witnesses revealed that the area was not secured following the first shooting, potentially allowing the second, fatal incident to occur.
The vigil featured speeches from community leaders, moments of silence, and heartfelt memories shared by those who knew Demetrius. Attendees brought candles, flowers, and mementos to honor his life, while calls for accountability and safer practices echoed throughout the gathering.
“Demetrius was a beloved member of the Kent community, and his untimely death has left a profound impact on family, friends, and those who knew him,” Oshan said.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide after Demetrius suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with gunfire erupting while patrons were still inside the establishment. Many in the community are now demanding answers about why patrons with firearms were allowed back into the venue after the initial shooting.
Attendees were encouraged to wear white or bright colors to symbolize hope and unity against gun violence, as the Kent community grapples with yet another senseless loss.
