Two young men were killed Monday morning, Sept. 28, when someone in another vehicle fired into their vehicle near the I-5 overpass on South 272nd Street on Kent’s West Hill, according to the Kent Police Department.
Kent and Des Moines Police officers responded about 10:43 a.m. after multiple 911 callers reported a shooting.
Witnesses told police a dark sedan pulled alongside the victims’ vehicle, someone inside fired multiple rounds and the sedan fled. It was last seen heading south on I-5.
“Initial information indicates that this was not a random act of violence and the shooting appears to have been targeted,” Kent Police said.
Officers found two victims inside a vehicle and removed them to provide medical aid. Puget Sound Fire and King County Medic One personnel provided emergency treatment, but sadly, both victims died at the scene, police said.
The victims appeared to be in their late teens or early 20s, according to police. Detectives were working to confirm their identities.
Witnesses reported being stopped in traffic when they heard multiple gunshots near the overpass, police said.
South 272nd Street at the I-5 overpass was closed in both directions for a while.
Kent detectives took over the investigation and were processing evidence, including available video from the area, to confirm descriptions of those involved and the vehicle used.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death and release the victims’ names after their families have been notified, police said.
