The Islamic Center of Federal Way (ICFW) in Kent is calling for community solidarity after their mosque was vandalized over the weekend.
Surveillance footage captured a man throwing rocks at the building (videos below), shattering windows before fleeing in a pickup truck.
The vandalism, which occurred late Saturday night, Dec. 28, 2024 at the mosque located just off South 272nd Street, left the center cleaning up broken glass and replacing a damaged window.
The incident has not yet been labeled a hate crime but is under investigation by the Kent Police Department.
“This should have never happened,” ICFW President Mohammed Khan told Fox13. “It’s not just the damage—it’s the place of worship. We should not be having this sort of stuff happening at any place of worship.”
Community and City Leaders Condemn the Act
Kent City Council President Satwinder Kaur is working closely with the mosque and law enforcement to hold the perpetrator accountable. She expressed her concern over a recent increase in vandalism targeting religious institutions, including her own Sikh temple earlier this year.
“It definitely will not be tolerated,” Kaur said. “Any type of crimes against religious institutions is just not acceptable.”
Despite the distress caused by the incident, members of the Islamic Center of Federal Way emphasized their commitment to forgiveness and dialogue.
“The teaching of Islam is forgiveness,” said Khan. “We want this person to come forward, admit the mistake, and talk to us. We want to understand what happened and put our community at ease.”
Call for Assistance
The Kent Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. If you recognize the individual caught on camera, you are urged to contact Kent Police immediately at (253) 856-5800.
